WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU VISIT US.

Naturally, many people are nervous about visiting an unfamiliar church for the first time. So what can you expect when you visit the South Auckland church of Christ?

Here at South Auckland we seek to follow Christ. Nothing more, nothing less. In that journey, the lamp of God’s word lights our way.

Courtesy and kindness

(Titus 3:2; James 2:1).
We are a friendly bunch and will do our best to say “Hi!” and introduce ourselves. After worship we break for a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. It’s also a great time to stick around and get to meet us.

Congregational Singing

(Ephesians 5:19-20).
We lift up our voices in praise to God. Song leaders draw on a mixture of traditional hymns and contemporary praise songs. Join in if you want, and don’t worry if you can’t carry a tune. Our goal is to glorify God (Colossians 3:16-17). There are no bands, choirs, or light shows. We keep it simple because that is what we find in the New Testament church.

Prayer

(1 Timothy 2:1).
At the very minimum we open and close our worship time with prayers, and we offer thanks for the bread and fruit of the vine during the Lord’s Supper. They are heartfelt and genuine (Luke 20:47; Romans 8:26; 1 Corinthians 14:15). Most of us bow our heads, which is a traditional sign of respect when approaching the throne of God in prayer (e.g., Exodus 34:8-9).

Lord’s Supper or Communion

(Matthew 26:26-29; 1 Corinthians 10:16-17).
Jesus set up this humble meal before his death. We pass around unleavened bread to remember his body, and small cups of grape juice to remember his blood. It is something we will endeavour to do “until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). For us at South Auckland it is a quiet, solemn time to think about the awesome sacrifice of Christ on the cross (Ephesians 5:2; 1 John 2:2).

Collection

(1 Corinthians 9:14; 16:1-3).
We support the work at South Auckland through the freewill offerings of our members. Please do not feel obligated to give when the bags (or plates) are passed around. Our finances are an open book, and we are registered with NZ Charities Services.

Preaching

(Acts 5:42; 2 Timothy 4:1-2).
We set aside about half an hour – plus or minus a few minutes – to share the Word of God. The goal of the lesson is to teach and to change hearts (2 Timothy 3:16-17). God has blessed us with a full-time minister (Trevor Major), but we also draw on the talents of other members and visiting speakers. Bring your Bible so you can compare what we do and say to what you read in Word of God (Acts 17:11). If you do not have a Bible, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to let you borrow one.
